A compilation of anthropological and archaeological papers and basic morphological data on the human skeletal remains from the Jiangnan region in China．To look for the ancestor of the immigrant Yayoi people who made substantial contribution to the formation of the Japanese, a Sino-Japanese anthropological joint research was performed for the first time in this region. It is now an established knowledge that the wet-rice agriculture that most distinctively characterizes the Japanese Yayoi culture was originated in Jiangnan. However, little study has been made so far on human remains from this region． As a result of this joint research, it was shown by means of morphological and molecular biological analyses that the people who lived in Jiangnan and adjacent area during the Eastern Zhou and Western Han dynasties exhibited a striking resemblance to the Yayoi people.
